1. California Almonds
California almonds are easily blanched, even though they have a hard shell. The majority of California Almond production falls into three categories:
Nonpareil – This type of California Almond is readily blanched & cut. It has a thin outer shell & a smooth kernel which allows for easy processing.
California – These almonds have a wide range of shell hardness & kernel shapes. They’re adaptable & perfect for any need.
Mission – These type of almonds have hard shells & small kernels. The shell-skin is darker than Nonpareil & have wrinkles.
2. Bitter Almonds
This type of almond is bitter in taste because of Hydrogen Cyanide content. They’re banned in the United States but they are used in the production of Almond Oil, Almond Liquor & other Almond products.
3. Chinese Almonds
These aren’t specifically almonds, but kernels of apricots that are grown just for their seeds. Just like Bitter Almonds, they can be mildly toxic if eaten raw.
4. Green Almonds
These are basically raw almonds & have a green furry covering. In this stage, the whole fruit with the covering can be consumed as the seed isn’t hard but in a pulp-like form.
5. Tuono Almonds
Originated in Italy, they have a high production of double almonds compared to other almonds. They have hard shells.
6. Ne Plus Ultra Almonds
These type of almonds have a French origin. Ne Plus Ultra Almonds have a large-sized nut & are light chocolate colored. They are excellent pollinators and produce consistently good yields.
7. Gurbandi Almonds
These almonds have Afghanistani origin & have high oil concentration in comparison to other varieties. They’re rich in nutrients & antioxidants. They’re popular as ‘Choti Giri’ natively. A small part of its yield is bitter, because of high oil concentration.
8. Bonita Almonds
These almonds are thick & pale in color. They’re native to Portugal & have a comparatively low yield on shelling. They are attractive due to its shape.
9. Mamra Almonds
Just like Gurbandi Almonds, Mamra variety is also grown in Afghanistan, along with Iran & Middle East. They have high carbohydrate content & fewer proteins in comparison to other varieties.
10. Verdal Almonds
This is one of the tastiest variety, with a flattened appearance & large seeds.
11. Parada Almonds
These types of almonds have large seeds & a dark-brown skin. Parada Almonds are also native to Portugal, just like Bonita. It has an attractive appearance because of its shape.
12. Texas Almonds
Texas Almonds have a showy white bloom which produces a wonderfully sweet nut. The trees bear thick fruit, but not so thick kernel & take time to flower.
13. Ferragnes Almonds
Ferragnes Almonds are of French origin. The fruits are of a quite large size, brown skinned & slightly pointed. This variety blooms very late.
14. Ferraduel Almonds
Just like Ferragnes, these Almonds are also of French origin. They have a think white shell & flattened appearance. They, like Ferragnes variety, bloom very late.
15. Marcona Almonds
These Almonds have a Spanish origin. They’re quite large in size, round-shaped & slightly rough. They have a quite low yield & no double almonds.
16. Moller De Tarragona
Just like Marcona, Moller De Tarragona has its roots in Spain. They’re big, wide & slightly dark brown. They have medium yield & moderate chances of double almonds.
17. Ferralise Almonds
These are small, thick, clear and very smooth almonds. They have a hard shell & moderate yield. Though, they yield fruits very late.
18. Casa Nova Almonds
These Almonds have a flattened appearance & a rough touch. They flower very late.
